CHAPTER TEN

"Careful Where You Step"

As we drove across the railroad tracks on Wednesday morning on our way to work, Ava reminded me of her evening plans. "I've got a dinner date with the girls tonight," she announced from the passenger seat of the Jeep. I was so happy for Ava that she had her group of friends. Despite the closure of the salon due to her developing allergies to the chemicals used there, the six of them had all remained close. They continued their tradition of dining out together, often traveling in an old church van with a designated driver, who picked everyone up.

Since I already knew I would be on my own after work, I'd scheduled a half day at the office. Being the manager had its perks. The weather was nice, and business at The Park usually slowed down midweek.

"What are your plans for today?" Ava asked, her attention focused on something outside the window.

I glanced at where she was looking and saw a young mother pushing a double stroller down the sidewalk. Now that school was back in session, there weren't any older children out and about during the day.

"Hopefully Cody can get away long enough to meet me for lunch in town," I said as I eased the vehicle into the turn lane and drove onto the bridge that overlooked The Park.

Cody and I hadn't been able to see or talk to each other much since the murder took place. He'd already been working overtime, and the editor's comments in the paper hadn't helped. Jack had his team working around the clock. The sheriff promised they would leave no stone unturned.

The parking lot was already filling up when we pulled into The Park. I was thankful to have my reserved spot up front. Ava and I were going across the footbridge when I heard a distinct meow coming from behind a hedge of Bush Monkey Flowers. We stopped walking and listened.

"Casper," Ava said in a hushed tone as she tried to coax the tomcat to come out from behind the orange and yellow blooms. "Here, kitty, kitty."

The Park's resident mascot was a gray-tabby-striped cat affectionately known as Casper. He was a shy fellow and only approached those he trusted. Ava pulled a handful of kitty treats from a bag and fed them to the well-fed cat. When he'd first been discovered in The Park's cemetery, some of the staff had built a shelter for the feline, and with so many fans, he never went hungry.

"I bet he and Coco would get along really well," I said, teasing her as she scratched Casper behind the ears. He purred in response and rubbed his body against her ankles.

"No, I don't think so." Ava brushed crumbs off her hands and gave the cat one last hug. "Coco likes having the place to herself."

On the other side of the footbridge, we came to the welcome sign inviting guests to explore the Calico Rock Mine and Ghost Town. My sister and I parted ways at the front door of the office.
